ARYA CLONAL
EXCLUSIVE (ORGANIC BLACK TEA)
[DJ 125]
2009 |
This
is one of Arya Tea Estates prized
offering which we couldn’t avoid.
Though came a bit late and is somewhat
close to Arya Ruby in characteristics.
Though not a Ruby, it can well be
stated that this tea can be taken
in lieu of Ruby, just that the leaf
appearance differs. Its one of finest
Arya Clonals from AV2 tea bushes and
is one that is hard to find. So grab
your share! Only if you taste it,
you will know it! Dry
Tea leaves: The dry leaves
are quite bold. The leaves seem well
rolled and twisted and bears that
elongated pointed shape. A well made
tea, attractive in appearance with
definite bloom which is accompanied
by silver and golden tips. The luster
on the buds due to its fine hairs
is worth mentioning. The leaves have
an overall dark purplish color with
abundance of tips, silver and golden.
A mixture of colors such as light
brown, dark brown, copper and some
green are also present. It has an
overwhelming caramellic, sweet and
chocolaty aroma which is also fruity
like the plum. Overall has musky aroma
which is also somewhat biscuity.
Wet Tea leaves:
The leaves open up into a coppery
infusion with a blend of dark green
leaves here and there. The infused
tea leaves are leafy due to its size.
The bright and lively infusion is
sweet smelling and highly fruity,
plum like. It possesses that muscatel
aroma mostly renowned for a Second
Flush tea which also tend towards
being chocolaty. When inhaled, one
can get a fresh minty feeling in the
nostrils which seem to cool your senses
and thus relax. Also somewhat like
Castleton Moonlight with that very
faint fishy character in aroma.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
It has a lovely full bodied cup which
tend to fill your mouth with buttery
effects. It has a lovely musty aroma
which is sweet, honey toned or like
burnt sugar and caramellic. The cup
or taste is buttery at the same time
sweet which is also accompanied by
chocolaty taste. This is also fruity
and nutty reminiscent of almonds.
It has that almondy, nutty aftertaste.
One of the best picks from
Autumn Flush presented by Arya Tea
Estate. A high grade tea which anyone
can enjoy due to its marvelous characteristics. |

CASTLETON FTGFOP1
TIPPY CLONAL
[DJ 312]
2009 |
Castleton
is famous for one tea, the Castleton
Muscatel, but Castleton do produce
other teas as well such as clonal
varieties. Muscatel is mostly china
grade. From amongst lots of Castleton
Autumnals, we chose this Tippy Clonal.
Lots of china varieties from Castleton
on the offering but this Tippy Clonal
stood tall amongst them. We bought
it.
Dry Tea leaves: The dry tea
leaves are smaller in comparison to
other teas we have produced and has
an overall olive green + brown appearance.
It has a mixture of colors such as
light and dark brown, black-purplish,
light and dark green and some rusty
colored. It has an even size and seems
well rolled and twisted though dwarf
sized in length. As the name suggests,
it has considerable amount of buds
or tips, silver and golden. It has
an intriguing sweet aroma which is
also musky with fruity characteristics.
The appearance of dry leaves is also
similar to those late First Flush
teas, which slowly tend to ‘black
away’ with the end of First
Flush. Wet Tea leaves:
The Castleton Tippy Clonal gets a
coppery infusion with dark bottle
green leaves blended beautifully with
the light and dark brown leaves. The
bright coppery infusion has a pleasing
nose which speaks to be somewhat sweet,
fruity and faintly musky or muscatel
in nature. Cup or
Tea Liqor: It has a rather
strong cup and due to its smaller
leaves, lesser amount of leaves for
steeping is recommended. Tiny leaves
tend to give more color and make it
stronger. For those Chai fans with
all the masala ingredients, a dash
of milk can be added, but not recommended.
Darjeeling is drunk best without milk
and sugar and with no other ingredients
mixed. The cup is full bodied and
has a sweet aroma which is honey oriented,
sugary and musky. It has some slight
astringency and the dryness can be
felt in the middle of the tongue while
the surrounding area seems smooth
and slippery.
In comparison to Autumn china
grade, you will only find a handful
of tippy clonal graded invoice from
Castleton Tea Garden. A tips oriented
clonal variety is considered rare
find because Autumn teas are not
blessed with tips in abundance as
in the case of First and Second
Flush. Enjoy your brew as this tea
is limited edition in the tea garden
itself! |

SUNGMA (TURZUM)
CLONAL WONDER (ORGANIC TEA)
[DJ 22]
2009 |
Second
Flush Sungma (Turzum) Clonal Wonder
won the hearts of many of our tea
friends and within a short span of
time, the tea got out of stock. This
is yet another offering of the same
grade tea, but from Autumn Flush 2009.
The characteristics have changed and
a pure Autumnal character now reflects
in the tea. Only a few invoices made,
check it out!
Dry Tea leaves: It has a
definite rusty appearance with a mix
color of dark rusty-orange, black
and dark brown leaves. It also has
green leaves, but very little in number.
It has marvelous shimmering hairs
on almost 90% of the leaves whether
black, brown etc. A fair amount of
tips can be seen scattered. The leaves
seem well rolled and twisted. It has
a sweet aroma which is also very faint
spice like. Wet
Tea leaves: The wet leaves
infuse into dark chocolate brown colored
leaves with some dark greens blended
beautifully. A lovely bright infusion
depicting bright liqor in the cup.
It has an inherent overall sweet,
honey like aroma which also tend to
be fruity and chocolaty.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
A lovely bright colory cup which is
full bodied and fills the mouth with
buttery feeling. It is flavory with
fruity and nutty taste indicating
slow growth at high altitude which
is most desirable. It has a thick
liqor which is filled with briskness.
There is no sign of astringency and
maybe this is due to very less amount
of green leaves. The liqor is smooth
and mature giving it a sweet lingering
aftertaste.
A marvelous offering from Sungma
Tea Estate (Turzum section) which
any tea lover would like. Limited
at hand. |

ARYA PEARL (ORGANIC
DARJEELING WHITE TEA)
[DJ 111]
2009 |
This
is one tea which cannot be avoided
if you are a true tea lover. This
one as we would like to call "The
nectar of the Gods" is just exotic
and limited. Its 100% handcrafted
Darjeeling white tea. Production of
such teas are not possible in bulk
and this whole year they could only
produce about 100-120 kgs. No machines
involved in the making, just sun drying
to a total of 6-8 hours and the tea
is ready. Its a divine tea not readily
available even if you want to purchase
it. This tea is very limited, Hurry!!
Dry Tea leaves: Its got an
amazing leafy dry tea leaves appearance,
overall green with a mixture of light
and dark yellow leaves on some and
the "two leaves and a bud"
story is intact which are vividly
visible. The buds adorn a greenish
leaf tinge which are then matted by
minute and fine silver hairs which
makes it shine. The leaves are highly
aromatic with fruity and flowery aroma
which is again sweet smelling accompanied
by light vegetal aroma. Wet
Tea leaves: It results in
leafy yellowish-green infusion with
an overall sweet floral and fruity
aroma. The two leaves and a bud can
be seen clearly with a silky touch.
Also accompanied by refreshing light
vegetal aroma. The wet leaves or infusion
seems to stand some multiple steepings
like the oolongs. Cup
or Tea Liqor: Most of the
teas, even white teas color the water
when brewed, but this one is exceptional,
the color of tea is just plain water
color meaning no color is introduced
to water and the observer may assume
one is just drinking plain water.
This is a sign of high quality white
tea and it is. Its got a beautiful
and refreshing fruity and flowery
notes which is very sweet and vegetal
to some extent. Leaves a sweet aftertaste
that is lingering.
If you are in pursuit of a
high grade White Tea, then this
Darjeeling White Tea - Arya Pearl
is a perfect example and a mark
of excellent Darjeeling White Tea,
rare and hard to find. |

MARGARET'S HOPE
THUNDERBOLT (HANDROLLED TEA)
[DJ 565]
2009 |
Established
in 1864, Margaret's Hope Tea Garden
bears this unusual name given by
the owner, Mr. Cruikshank in memory
of his beloved daughter, Margaret.
She was very much enchanted by the
tea garden and promised to return
before sailing for England. Unfortunately
she died of a tropical disease leaving
the promise unfulfilled. Her father
christened the garden as 'Margaret's
Hope' in her memory.
Originally sold as Margaret's Hope
Handrolled Special, this re-christened
name MH Thunderbolt is the courtesy
of Mr. Anil Gurung from Margaret's
Hope Tea Garden. Thunderbolt here
means bearing affinity to Darjeeling,
its people and the tea laborers.
It also means we will most probably
buy all of this product every year
now, hopefully!!
Dry Tea leaves: This Margaret’s
Hope handrolled is like the animal
which changes its appearance with
the changing season. If you had
the delight of seeing the same grade
during the Second Flush, you will
be surprised to see the change now.
Although the tea leaves are of similar
size as the Second Flush, the leaf
color is a total revamp. Its got
chunky and elongated leaves similar
to Goomtee Clonal Tips Light but
are more bolder. Its got a black-purplish
bloom with some mix of light and
green leaves. It has a lovely aroma
that is fruity and nutty accompanied
by some milky or caramellic character.
It has considerable amount of longish
tips with some portion of two leaves
and a bud visible.
Wet Tea leaves:
It has an overall coppery infusion
with a mix of light and dark brown
color which also has a slight greenish
tinge on some. Two leaves and a
bud are visible to some extent.
It has a lovely bright infusion
with a pronounced fruity and nutty
bouquet. This tea seems to have
captured the rural scent along with
it and was felt in the aroma. We
know it because we have sensed it
as we enter these areas, lovely
smell of freshness, cows, goats
grazing etc. Sounds funny but sure
tea is mystical!
Cup or Tea Liqor:
This handrolled tea from Margaret’s
Hope lends a light cup when compared
to other classic Darjeeling Autumnal
grades. It has a bright liqor and
steeping for a little longer maybe
4-5 minutes can get the essentials
into the water and recommended.
We have noticed that the tea doesn’t
get bitter or astringent even if
steeped for long. It has a lively
taste with fine fruity and nutty
flavor reminiscent of peanuts. Sweet
tasting tea which is overall graded
delicious.
A rare tea from Margaret’s
Hope produced in limited quantities
every tea season. Limited at hand
and we found out that lot of our
clients missed this during the Second
Flush. Here is your chance to grab
it! |

GOOMTEE (MV)
CLONAL TIPS LIGHT (ORGANIC)
[EX 26]
2009 |
This
tea has been processed from the tea
leaves plucked from the organic Muscatel
Valley section of Goomtee Tea Estate.
The Muscatel Valley of Goomtee is
located at a higher elevation producing
some very good clonal leaves. This
region is located close to Upper Jungpana.
Mr. AK Kumar (owner Goomtee Tea Estate)
and Mr. Raawat (Manager, Goomtee Tea
Estate) were kind enough to sample
this tea to us. We liked it, we bought
it. Very Limited!
Dry Tea leaves: It has got
an amazing leafy character similar
to Margaret’s Hope Thunderbolt
(handrolled tea) in size. Larger elongated
tea leaves with a good amount of buds
or tips. The tips vary from having
grey, white and green sheen. It has
a marvelous bloom with a mixture of
dark chocolate, black-purple and brown
colored leaves with considerable amount
of green leaf. A lot of two leaves
and a bud are visible. It has faint
notes of sweetness, milk like and
tender baby corn. Overall it makes
the tea very fresh and tender.
Wet Tea leaves:
Since the dry tea leaves are leafy,
the infusion beautifully unfolds into
huge pale-yellow + coppery infusion.
The green colored leaves magically
seems to have left its green color
behind in the steeped liqor and gets
a color transformation. The tips are
clearly visible in the shape of moon
shaped tipped at the two ends. Apart
from the tips alone, the incredible
two leaves and a bud are seen in abundance
glazing due to the soaked silver hairs.
The leaves are sweet smelling with
tender floral nose. Cup
or Tea Liqor: As the name
suggests, “light” has
been added to the tea grade depicting
light colored liqor quite similar
to some Darjeeling white teas we have
seen. It has a bright liqor which
is more of pale-yellow in color. The
tea is smooth and has a mellow round
taste. It’s a delicate tea with
faint notes of fruits and flowers.
It is sweet in taste. We advise to
steep this tea a little longer, about
4-5 minutes for the tea to unfold
its essentials into the cup. It has
a sweet aftertaste.
A limited edition and hard
to find, high quality and tender
organic Darjeeling Tea from the
highlands of Goomtee Tea Estate.
