SINGBULLI CLONAL CLASSIC SUPER FINE
(ORGANIC DARJEELING TEA)
[EX 1]
2010 |
Singbulli
Tea Estate is situated in the Mirik
valley about 65 kms south of Darjeeling
town. It is in close vicinity with
Phuguri Tea Estate and is renowned
for producing one of best of Darjeeling
Teas every tea season. Owned by the
Birla or Jayshree Tea, it has 303
hectares under tea cultivation and
has a gross yield of 600 kgs per hectare.
The main tea makers at Singbulli Tea
Estate are Mr. Mantri (Manager) and
Mr. Parikh (Factory assistant Manager).
From amongst various classic grades
we sampled this First Flush, teas
from Singbulli won hands down on
both clonal and china varieties.
We just couldn’t avoid leaving
this tea out. It is one of those
teas which you won’t find
in abundance. We have already sold
some major portion of this tea to
our existing clients even before
we actually updated to site. So
you can guess, it’s very very
limited! Once gone, it will be gone
forever. So hurry!
Dry Tea leaves: One
of the most attractive classic clonal
appearance we have seen this 2010
First Flush. It has an overall greenish
appearance with a mixture of some
brown, grey and black tea leaves.
It has a high abundance of silver
tips or buds. The dry tea leaves are
well rolled and twisted giving it
that elongated wiry look. Most of
the dry tea leaves seem clad in tiny
silver hairs. The dry leaves has a
creamy chocolaty flavor which seem
very smooth. It has that “confectionary”
smell of pastries which is also flowery
and fruity reminiscent of pineapple.
Wet Tea leaves: The
elongated dry tea leaves unfold into
a beautiful infusion. The abundance
of tips present are mostly depicted
as green/yellow in color. It has a
fresh sweet aroma with a lively appearance
which further tells the upcoming story
of a bright liquor. It has an overall
greenish-yellow appearance with a
mixture of brown, bottle green, yellow
and light green infused tea leaves.
It also lends a fresh flowery nose
which is also somewhat nutty and fruity. Cup or Tea
Liqor: This clonal cup is
lighter than the rest of classic varieties
pertaining to abundance of silver
tips, larger leaf size and being a
clonal. Clonals are found to be lighter
in cup than the china varieties, but
if the leaf size of clonals are small,
it can produce a stronger cup. The
tea leaves produce a light and bright
golden brew. It has an excellent mild
and smooth creamy caramellic aroma.
It also has a sweet flowery flavor.
While sipping, the first intake is
very smooth, grows slightly bitter
and again smoothens and leaves a creamy
taste. The astringency and bitterness
is very less in this tea. It has a
sweet aftertaste on the tip of the
tongue.
All in all, a limited edition
high quality First Flush Darjeeling
Tea from Singbulli Tea Estate. This
tea can fit all palate because it
is all well balanced when compared
to different likings of tea connoisseur
palates. |

SINGBULLI CHINA CLASSIC SUPER FINE
(ORGANIC TEA) [EX
2] 2010 |
Singbulli
has two varieties of teas mainly the
clonal (above) and china varieties.
The finely plucked china variety,
properly processed, giving it the
right shape has resulted in this 'china
classic super fine' grade. Singbulli
produces different varieties of teas
and these first two on this page are
given the highest grades which a classic
First Flush Darjeeling Tea needs to
be given. The gradation is tea estate
specific and this is one of their
best classic grades.
Dry Tea leaves: As a classic
china grade and being a First Flush
tea, it has an overall greenish appearance
with a mix of dark green, light green
and slight brown colored tea leaves.
The leaves are well rolled and twisted
and has considerable amount of silver
tips. It has an attractive bloom which
is clean and evenly sorted. Apart
from being sweet and caramellic (milky),
it also has that fresh floral scent
which is nutty to some extent. The
fruity character is also worth mentioning
here.
Wet Tea leaves: This
China classic variety gets a bright
greenish infusion with light and bottle
green leaves blended beautifully with
light brown leaves. It has a pleasing
nose which speaks to be fresh, fruity
and flowery in nature. It also lends
a sweet honey toned aroma which is
somewhat orangy and almondy in nature
as well. Cup or
Tea Liqor: It has a golden
brew and the strength of the liquor
is weak as it is a sign of the Darjeeling
First Flush. It has a mild sweet taste
with a flowery/rosy cup. It is fruity
in character as well which is also
nutty hinting more towards almonds.
It fills the palate with a buttery
taste which enters the nose as you
sip. Some astringency is present making
the upper-side gums dry. Mild bitterness
is a welcome characteristics which
a First Flush china grade possesses.
It leaves a sweet-buttery aftertaste
lingering for quite sometime on the
tip of your tongue.
A first grade china classic
variety this First Flush from Singbulli
Tea Estate. Also limited in quantity,

ARYA RUBY (ORGANIC DARJEELING TEA)
[EX 13] 2010 |
Arya
Tea Estate is one of those tea gardens
which have earned a name for its quality
Darjeeling Tea production. They have
a special range of Darjeeling Teas
and each one of its individual grade
has a very unique character unlike
any other tea from the entire tea
estates in the Darjeeling Hills. One
of such variety Arya produces is “Arya
Ruby”.
Our first encounter years back surprised
us, firstly with the cup color which
defies seasonal characteristics. A
light or weak brew is a First Flush
character and all other tea gardens
share this as a common character,
but Ruby as the name suggests is darker.
Though a black tea, it has many characteristics
of an oolong and the aroma, flavor
and taste sets it apart from the rest.
A high grade Darjeeling Tea which
we have always liked it every tea
season.
Dry Tea leaves: Unlike other
Darjeeling First Flush teas, Arya
Ruby doesn't contribute to the greenish
leaf color fact file, but is more
chocolate brown in appearance with
some dark green leaves. The Ruby leaves
are quite chunky, but not flaky. It
is well rolled and twisted showing
high degree of good processing and
possesses a definite bloom. It has
considerable amount of golden and
silver tips. Most of the leaves bear
that grey-white sheen and gives it
a stylish look. It has a sweet honey
toned bouquet which boasts of being
chocolaty like that of a pastry (brownies).
Wet Tea leaves:
A lovely dark chocolate brown infusion
with a mixture of light olive green
infused tea leaves. The twisted dry
tea leaves now unfold and some amount
of two leaves and a bud are visible.
It has a malty nose, caramel like
reminiscent of dark chocolate. It
has a slight meaty aroma similar to
an oolong, but is not. High degree
of nutty character is present which
in turn also proves to be mild fruity
and flowery in character.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
Unlike other First Flush cups, Arya
Ruby always has some cup strength
irrespective of the flush or tea season.
The cup gains more strength in color
during the Second Flush tea season.
This Ruby has a lovely amber brew
which is highly flavory. Every sip
is smooth which is highly fruity reminiscent
of grapes and lemon (slightly meaty).
It has a flowery characteristics attached
as well with a slight hint of vanilla.
It is highly nutty as well and is
caramel like. Very light astringency
and no bitterness can be found in
the cup.
One cup can make you want for
more and that is why Arya Ruby is
one of the most highly sought after
teas in the world. Try and find
out for yourselves. Know the difference
if you have tasted other First Flush
Dareeling Teas. |

ARYA PEARL (ORGANIC DARJEELING WHITE TEA)
[EX 8A]
2010 |
Considering
the different types of Darjeeling
Teas available during different tea
seasons, Arya Tea Estate contributes
one of its unique teas which till
now, has not been able to replicate
by any other tea garden. For instance,
Arya Pearl, an organic Darjeeling
White Tea which is totally handcrafted
with no machine involved in the processing.
This makes it possible to retain its
original 'two leaves and a bud' structure.
It is sun dried to a total of 6-8
hours and the Pearl is ready. Very
limited and hard to find tea.
Dry Tea leaves: Its got an
astonishing chunky dry tea leaves
appearance, and unlike the presence
of yellow leaves during the Autumn
Flush, overall green appearance overrides
all. A beautiful luster formed by
the matting of tiny silver hairs on
the surface gives it a definite stylish
bloom. The 'two leaves and a bud'
are intact and seems as if it is plucked
fresh and ready to brew in its raw
state. It has an overwhelming fresh
and sweet boiled-vegetal aroma which
is also fruity and flowery in characteristics.
Wet Tea leaves: Beautiful
lively green infusion with large leaves.
The two leaves and a bud appears vivid
and has that silky look on it due
to the abundance of tiny silver hairs
present on the tea leaf surface. It
has a very fresh nose as if the whole
of spring is embodied into it. It
is slightly lemony and seems as if
a light essence of vanilla is added
to it. It has a complex flowery aroma
accompanied by light boiled-vegetal
notes. Cup
or Tea Liqor: Most Darjeeling
white teas introduce color in hot
water, but this white tea from Arya
seems exceptional with a cup that
is almost colorless. Only the drinker
knows of its flavor and the enjoyment
got from it. This surely depicts a
sign of high quality white tea from
Arya. Its got a beautiful and refreshing
fruity and flowery notes which is
very sweet and vegetal to some extent.
Some hints of lemon and slight saltiness
can be felt and the cup is very smooth
to taste. Slight hint of astringency
is there, but is negligible in percentage
- astringency is a sign of First Flush
Darjeeling; some teas comprise of
greater and some in lesser value.
Leaves a sweet aftertaste that is
lingering.
Definitely one of top notch
Darjeeling white teas which can
well compete with other world renowned
white teas from other parts of the
world. A limited edition tea which
is hard to find at this price. Very

GOOMTEE FTGFOP1 CHINA SPECIAL
[EX 2]
2010 |
First
planted by Mr. Henry Lennox in 1899,
Goomtee Tea Estate is located at
Mahanadi very close to Jungpana
Tea Estate. Mr. Asok Kumar was kind
enough to send us various grades
of Goomtee tea samples from which
we could choose a few. This classic
china variety speaks of a true Darjeeling
characterized First Flush product
which is so well known through decades.
Apart from the Muscatel Valley tea
(above) we bought, we found this
tea to be well balanced to fit every
palate and included in our list
of teas.
Dry Tea leaves: These Goomtee
leaves are well rolled and twisted
with an overall greenish appearance.
The greenish tinge imparted to the
color of the leaves has complex
shades of dark green, light green,
some brown and a few black leaves.
The leaves have a considerable amount
of silver tips or buds. The slightly
elongated tea leaves are well sorted
out and has an even spread giving
it a pretty bloom. It has faint
nutty/almondy fragrance which extends
to be sweet and slightly lemony.
The sweetness can be compared to
that of honey.
Wet Tea leaves:
Overall greenish appearance with
light and olive green colored leaves
with some amount of brown. It emits
faint notes of fresh wet grassland
which comes as a complex mix package
with the inclusion of nutty, flowery
and fruity aroma. The faint sweet
notes depicts the tenderness of
the tea leaves when plucked and
tends to speak of the region where
it had grown.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
A lively golden brew, weaker in
cup and excellent in flavor. The
cup is smooth in the first intake,
grows slightly bitter if the liqor
is prolonged in the mouth and leaves
a flowery after effect. It has faint
rosy notes and fruity flavor reminiscent
of orange peels. It has marvelous
faint notes of almonds and extends
its characteristics of being nutty.
A mild astringency is felt and has
a sweet rosy/flowery aftertaste.

UPPER JUNGPANA (ORGANIC DARJEELING TEA)
[EX 6]
2010 |
Jungpana
Tea Estate is renowned for its First
Flush classic Darjeeling teas. Mr.
Mudgal, Manager, has been with the
tea estate for a long time and has
dedicated his time producing one
of finest classic Darjeeling teas.
Upper Jungpana or the higher elevation
region is at par with Goomtee's
Majhua division and lie side by
side. This tea is high grown on
steep hills with an all time experience
of fog/mist, rain and sun. The slow
growth impart a tremendous quality
to the tea bushes and hence the
classic Jungpana excels with its
own unique Darjeeling First Flush
character.
Jungpana Tea Estate Legend:
"Legend
has it that many years ago a British
hunter was roaming the Himalayas
with his faithful gurkha Jung Bahadur
by his side when they were attacked
by a leopard.
In trying to save his master Jung
Bahadur was severely mauled before
his master dispensed with the beast.
Jung Bahadur was weak and thirsty
and asked his master for ‘pana',
or, water. He was carried to a nearby
stream and given water to drink
but died in his master's arms soon
thereafter.
Eversince that moment, the area
has been known as JUNGPANA, or,
where Jung Bahadur had his last
drink of water. The tea estate planted
later, carries the name till today."
Dry Tea leaves: The dry
tea leaves bear a greenish appearance
with some amount of silver tips.
It is well rolled and twisted giving
it a slight wiry look. It has a
mixture of olive green, some brown
and some black colors. It has a
very sweet light fragrance. It has
that almondy or nutty character
which also proves to be buttery.
The sweetness is accompanied by
honey toned character. Slightly
vegetal addition can be observed.
Also has mild fruity or orangy character
and flowery reminiscent of the rose.
Wet Tea leaves:
The green dry tea leaves turn pale
tending more towards olive green
with a mixture of brown leaves.
It has a sweet nose mixed with a
minty character. It is nutty like
the almonds and flowery like the
marigold.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
Most of Darjeeling First Flush teas
have a weak cup that appears quite
translucent in nature, but highly
aromatic. This does not differ from
the above statement - A beautiful
light golden hue cup with a definite
shine. It has sweet notes bearing
affinity to honey. It has a lively
character with a definite bite.
It is highly flowery and nutty in
its characteristics which is buttery
and almondy. It has some astringency
affecting middle portion of the
tongue making it dry. It has a sweet
floral aftertaste that lingers on
for quite sometime.
A top notch classic Darjeeling
China variety tea from the world
famous Jungpana Tea Estate. We have
noticed that Japanese and Koreans
