SECOND
FLUSH DARJEELING TEAS 2010 |
 |
|
ARYA DIAMOND
[DJ 29]
(Organic Darjeeling Tea 2010)
|
A
limited edition organic Darjeeling
Tea from the reputed Arya Tea
Estate. Only two 'lots' were
made this Second Flush season,
one was sent to Germany and
the other we have it here for
you. Mr. Roy and Mr. Sanyal
are the main people behind the
making of this tea with Mr.
Roy (Manager, Arya) putting
an extra vigil in this tea's
making.
Dry Tea leaves: According
to Mr. Roy, this tea has been
made from specially plucked
clonal leaves having just one
leaf and a bud. A lot of labor
has been put by the women tea
pluckers of Arya Tea Estate
and thanks to them for making
this tea possible. It has an
overall attractive bloom which
are fairly larger in size than
the normal classic graded Darjeeling
teas. The leaves are elongated
and wiry with dark yellowish
and chocolate brown color. There
is abundance of silver and golden
tips, quite remarkably handled
during processing. It has a
rich smell which seemingly bears
similarity to that of a complex
mixture of chocolate, mint and
fresh fruits. The nutty/almondy
aroma is also worth mentioning
here. Wet Tea
leaves: The infused
leaves beautifully opens up
and occupies quite a space on
the inverted lid of the tea
tasting cup. The infused leaf
size depicts the original size
of the tea leaf. It has a lively
brown overall infusion with
the golden and silver tips/buds
turning pale yellow in color.
One leaf and a bud is quite
visible. It has a sweet fragrance
with slight hints of lemon.
It also has a nutty character
which comes coated with the
complexity of different fruits.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
It is less darker than the classic
Second Flush Darjeelings. Classic
Darjeelings always bear that
tiny size china styled leaves
while opposed to it, this tea
has a light and bright golden
brew. The tea is brisk and an
instant sweetness can be felt
when sipped. It also lends a
nutty character with some complex
undertones of fruitiness.

MARGARET'S
HOPE SILVER MOON [EX
33] 2010 |
Mr.
Anil Gurung was kind enough
to sample us this tea at the
time when all the Darjeeling
Tea gardens had a tea tasting
session at Darjeeling Planters
Club. This is a special reserve
tea and only one lot has been
made and tagged as "Silver
Moon". Silver Moon represents
abundance of white silver tips
or buds shaped in the form of
crescent or moon; thus the name
"Silver Moon". This
is also a limited edition tea
and we are glad that we were
able to procure it.
Dry Tea leaves: The
dry tea leaves bear that long
wiry look which seems to wave
through twists and turns. Similar
to the size of Arya Diamond,
but a bit larger. It has an
overall chocolate brown color
with abundance of silver tips
and yellow colored or golden
tips. Most of the leaves have
a definite luster owned through
the presence of tiny silver
and golden hairs. It possesses
a clean outlook depicting properly
sorted tea. It has a sweet aroma
mixed with the character of
being biscuity and malty; caramel
like. It also has that mild
nutty and fruity characteristics. Wet Tea
leaves: The opening
of these infused leaves is a
charm. It unfolds into its original
shape and size and the color
change from dry to wet is remarkable.
It has a bright 'dark chocolate'
infusion with pale yellow colored
infused tips. It emits sweet
smelling fragrance which also
speaks to be somewhat malty
and fruity. Slight hints of
nutty character as that of almonds
cannot be discarded here.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
It has a bright golden brew
similar to Arya Diamond which
is lighter in color than the
classic Darjeeling Teas. It
has a quality cup with a definite
brisk character denoting a good
quality tea arisen from proper
manufacture. The most desirable
flavor depicting Darjeelings
is present which is reminiscent
of the teas grown at high altitudes
such as Margaret's Hope. It
has a well rounded cup which
is mellow. It has a sweet taste
which has complex undertones
of fruits and flowers. It has
a very slight hint of astringency
which is at a minimum and can
be felt in the middle of the
tongue. It has a sweet fruity
aftertaste. |

SINGBULLI
WHITE JADE [EX
4/1]
(Organic Darjeeling Tea 2010) |
Now
this is another special and
limited edition tea which was
already limited when Mr. Mantri
sampled us. The appearance may
mislead many taking to be a
white tea, but it is not. It
is made more in the oolong fashion,
but not completely oolong as
well. Its a black tea with the
appearance of a white and the
manufacture process similar
to that of an oolong. "White
Jade" here signifies the
huge and elongated white or
silver tips with that dark-green
leaves. The infused leaves resembles
the color of the jade and thats
why "White Jade".
It belongs to the exotic variety
and limited in quantity.
Dry Tea leaves: The
extremely furry white bloom
signifies the utter importance
given and care taken in the
manufacture of this tea. The
overall appearance is whitish
green with more of silver tips
resembling elongated shaped
snow buds. The leaf size is
huge and the largest among the
teas we have procured this Second
flush season. The leaves are
elongated and well twisted.
Almost all of the tea leaves
appear to have a sheen due to
the existence of minute silver
hairs on them. There is a huge
abundance of silver tips, infact
greater than the greens and
browns and that is why "White
Jade". "White"
depicts these elongated silver
tips and "Jade" refers
to the infusion described below.
Don't forget to smell the tea
leaves as soon as you open the
pouch. A high degree of floral
and fruity aroma can be noticed
instantly. On further judging,
it has sweet vanilla like essence
with a slight twist of lemon.
It is slightly nutty in character
as well.
Wet Tea leaves:
The magic is observed when these
chunky-longish dry leaves unfold
in hot water. It has a lovely
bright appearance which is overall
Jade like in color; thus "White
Jade". It has a fresh bouquet,
thoroughly pronounced, giving
an assessment of detailed and
careful manufacture in order
to obtain the desired quality
and flavor. The white tips turn
into greener version when immersed
in hot water and imparts the
jade like look. It emits slight
veggie notes accompanied by
very mild flowery and fruity
aroma.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
The strength of the cup is lighter
in comparison to the other Second
Flush teas we have purchased
this year. The liqor is shimmering
with light-yellow color resulting
in a lively fresh taste. The
brisk character is clean in
nature with exceptional flavor.
It has a smooth cup and has
a well balanced body which tends
to be sweet as well as slightly
salty. It has a definite point
with underlying complexity of
various fruits and flowers.
It also has mild hints of almonds
and petains to be nutty as well.
Slight vegetal notes and tastes
can also be felt. It leaves
behind a lingering sweet aftertaste.
Very mild astringency can be
felt.

RISHEEHAT
CLONAL FLOWERY [DJ
141]
(Organic Darjeeling Tea 2010) |
This
tea was one of the teas which
were sampled during the tea
tasting session held at Darjeeling
Planters Club. Only the best
picks are brought here to showcase
and pride a particular garden's
seasonal produce. Mr. Rajiv
Kumar, Manager Risheehat Tea
Estate, was kind enough to sample
us this tea and provide us an
opportunity to buy it. He just
gave us 2 hours time to decide
and bid on it. The bidding was
done and thus the tea procured.
Now its here for you.
Dry Tea leaves: Last
year we did purchase a line
of Risheehat Clonal Flowery
and it was a good tea. Some
tea connoisseurs really fell
for it. This years make is even
better, with the dry tea leaves
being little larger than previous
year. It is well rolled and
twisted having an elongated
look somewhat wiry in nature.
It has an overall chocolate
brown appearance with abundance
of slender silver tips showing
sign of high quality manufacture
with the preservation of good
look and flavor. It is very
sweet in nature with an overwhelming
warm chocolate like aroma. The
caramelic aroma comes packed
with other complex fruity notes
which results in a pleasing
aroma that fills the mind with
warmth and a longing for this
tea. The nutty characteristics
cannot be avoided here. This
is a perfect example of a classic
quality Darjeeling Second Flush
tea.
Wet Tea leaves:
It has an overall coppery infusion
which seems even in nature.
The mixture of light and dark
brown leaves are bright with
an inherent character of rich
smell that is highly complex,
leading more towards fruity
and flowery characteristics.
It also has light nutty aroma
which is accompanied by a small
degree of sweetness.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
It has a heavier strength compared
to the ones stated above, but
doesn't lack in briskness. Infact
the brisk or lively taste is
very much prominent. The cup
tends towards reddish-orange
color which can be tagged as
coppery. Brewing this for a
complete 5 minutes time can
make this cup a bit bitter;
try brewing for 3 minutes and
try it. Of course you can try
different time settings. It
has mild biscuity taste with
exceptional quality flavor or
undertones of caramel, fruits
and nuts. It is full bodied
and mellow. |

DARJEELING
TEA SECOND FLUSH 2009 |
|
Goomtee
FTGFOP1 Yellow Tea
2009 |
| This
particular grade of tea can
be called one of the first Darjeeling
Tea experimented at Goomtee
Tea Estate by the Manager, Mr.
Sagar Rawat. Its similar to
green tea, but most Darjeeling
green teas are average quality
except for a few grades such
as Arya Emerald. Most of Darjeeling
green teas part a light vegetal
note with accompanying light
Darjeeling characteristics,
but this as being a yellow tea
imparts a total different character.
The processing of yellow tea
is similar to that of greens,
but supposed to have a slower
drying period. This yellow tea
has come out to be quite different
because of the Darjeeling characteristics
present. If nurtured and processed
well, this can have a new market
of its own with a different
fan base.
This batch was specially
ordered by one of our wholesale
customers, but Goomtee sent
us some extra sack. Just a
sack is remaining with us
and thought why not we put
it up and let others try as
well.
Dry Tea leaves: It
seems to be a beautiful combination
of yellow, black and green
leaves, with an overall blackish-yellow
appearance. The darker blackish
leaves tend to have some yellow
spots as if tending to peal
off the dark façade and reveal
the yellow inside. Quite a
unique appearance. The leaves
are curly, but not resembling
that of bps grade which are
much shorter in length. To
be precise, it has got well
rolled and twisted slender
leaves which tend to curl.
The first aroma gives an intriguing
feel of roasted peanuts which
is quite rare in a Darjeeling
green. Recommended: Smell
as soon as you open the pack.
It has got considerable amount
of tips and if observed closely,
the black leaves tend to appear
shiny due to the presence
of minute silver hairs. Apart
from the first roasted peanuts
characteristics, it also imparts
a slight fruity aroma, which
also appears to have a very
mild meaty character reminiscent
of an oolong tea.
Wet Tea leaves:
It has a mild sweet, honey
toned nose. The leaves tend
more towards the yellow-greenish
color leaving the black hidden.
The curly leaves tend to expand
and reveal its true size.
Apart from the slight sweetness,
it tends to be more nutty
similar to almonds; fruity
and the roasted peanuts character
can be found here as well.
It also has that slight vegetal
notes common in Darjeeling
green and white teas. Mild
meaty character also present,
but not prominent.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
It imparts a pale yellow colored
liqor which has a weak body.
The cup gets bitter if steeped
for more than 3 minutes, so
2.5-3 minutes steeping recommended.
It is slightly astringent
leaving the middle of the
tongue dry. It tastes like
a green Darjeeling slightly
vegetal, sweet, but also nutty
as the black Darjeeling teas.
If you like to try what
Darjeeling is doing behind
the tea bushes, then we would
highly recommend on trying
this tea. We would love to
hear your feedbacks. A rare
and limited edition tea. |

GOOMTEE
(MUSCATEL VALLEY) FTGFOP1
(ORGANIC DARJEELING TEA) 2009 |
This
tea is from the Muscatel Valley
section (Majhua division) of
Goomtee Tea Estate, at an altitude
of over 4500 ft. and organically
grown. The leaves brought from
the Muscatel Valley are processed
separately in the Goomtee factory
giving utter importance to quality.
Dry Tea leaves: It
has an overall coppery appearance
with a mixture of black, light
and dark brown colors. Abundance
of tips can be found which are
a mixture of silver and golden
buds. The leaves are well twisted
and evenly sized and most of
them covered by tiny microscopic
grey hairs. It has a sweet fragrance
which is also chocolaty, honey
toned, almondy with some buttery
notes and musky. Wet
Tea leaves: An overall
bright coppery infusion and
has a rare and complex fruity
and flowery aroma. It is slightly
minty or peppermint like as
you inhale which is accompanied
by sweet, honey toned fruity
flavor which match up to the
plum characteristics.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
The cup is smooth and full bodied
with a coppery cup color. An
overwhelming sweet aroma which
is somewhat minty in characteristics
seem to govern the cup. This
is in turn accompanied by other
notable fragrance which is almond
like and sweet reminiscent of
the fruit guava and plum. When
doing the first heavy slurping
which we do as a rule for tea
tasting, the tip of the tongue
suddenly gets salty which further
circulates throughout the mouth
diverting into different complex
tastes. The diverted tastes
are almondy, sweet, honey toned,
minty and limey at the tongue
tip. Has a sweet aftertaste.

TEA) - (EX - 42)
2009 |
Dry
Tea leaves: Most of
the average Darjeeling greens
we got so far has a particular
similarity of being less tippy,
but surprisingly this organic
Arya Green is well rolled keeping
in mind the texture of the buds
to be appealing. It has a overall
greenish appearance with a mixture
of light and dark green leaves
with an abundance of silver
tips. It has a light flowery
aroma which is also slightly
minty, limey and somewhat meaty
or soupy like the chicken soup.
The previous description may
sound funny, but that’s
what we found. Wet
Tea leaves: It has
an overall greenish appearance
with a very few brown infused
leaves. The tips surprisingly
appeared to be pale while or
creamy in color. The aroma of
these infused leaves are somewhat
salty, ginger like, minty with
a meaty aroma surrounding all.
Cup or Tea Liqor:
The cup is light and has a pale
yellow colored liquor. It gives
hints of slightly flowery notes
that is also limey, somewhat
salty and meaty like the chicken
soup. Slightly grassy-salty
and limey in taste and the meaty
taste can be discovered as one
gulps it down. It has a sweet
