2nd ) SECOND FLUSH DARJEELING TEAS 2007 |
We are honored to present
you the carefully picked, renowned Second
Flush Darjeeling Tea selection 2007 - have
a look below. We would like to say that
we nearly burnt our lips sipping in the
teas poured on those hot china clays. Well,
again cooled down while sipping in the lukewarm
liqors. Just a small tip - teas are graded
by both their quality while the liqor is
hot and when it has cooled down - some teas
get a prominent character while it cools.
Anyways, a lot of teas came to us as samples;
we even visited some new unexplored tea
gardens, the selection which lies before
you rose their heads up as classic teas
both in terms of quality and pricing. The
hard part is done, all you have to do now
is "Choose, Order and Savour'.

OUR
RATING OF SECOND FLUSH 2007 TEAS:
In due course of time our new and existing
customers have asked our opinion about 2007
First Flush and Second Flush teas, specifically
pertaining as to which teas are better and
which ones are not. Well, all of the Darjeeling
teas we have on our site are good - some
are good with their own inherent quality
and some are good in terms of their quality
+ value for money. Since a large request
has come to us we are laying out in the
form of a rating given to each tea which
are as follows;
Higher the no. of stars, greater the
quality
Castleton Muscatel |
     |
Puttabong China Fine |

Value for money + quality |
Jungpana SFTGFOP1 Wiry |

Value for money + quality |
Risheehat Flowery (FTGFOP1) |
     |
Thurbo Muscat |
    |
|
Individual tea ratings are done by our
clients by clicking the stars - if you have
purchased our tea, you can rate it too by
clicking the stars under individual tea.

CASTLETON MUSCATEL
DARJEELING TEA - 2007 |
Castleton
as a garden is renowned for its second
flush teas especially the muscatel
line of DJs. But one should not be
convinced that all teas from Castleton
are equally good and are of the same
quality. Among the muscatels too there
is a wide difference in appearance
and character resulting in a good
or a bad muscatel variety. The line
(invoice) we picked up is one of the
best among 5 muscatel varieties that
were shown to us along with other
china grades. Mr. DB Gurung (Castleton
main tea maker) had taken the sample
to the tea tasting session held by
J. Thomas (Auction holder) here in
Darjeeling, and guess what, J. Thomas
tasters suggested Mr. Gurung to make
teas on the lines of the sample he
brought for tasting. He was very happy
and called Benoy to give the good
news. We were happy with our tea tasting
because the teas we bought were appreciated
by renowned tea tasters from J. Thomas.
The dry leaves have a blackish appearance
with a mix of brown leaves with some
amount of tips (silver and golden
buds). The dry leaves have a particular
shine depicting high quality. Give
a gentle blow with your breath on
the dry leaves and smell it –
our nose caught lemony, malty and
muscatel notes. The infused leaves
had a beautiful fruity note of grapes
resembling muscatel that is somewhat
lemony also. The liqor is full bodied
and smooth – its chocolaty or
rather malty, lemony and the muscatel
character can be found jumping on
tongue tips and deep within. A real
Darjeeling character oriented tea
from Castleton. Darjeeling is famous
because of its muscatel character
and this is one which boasts of having
it – its prominent. |

PUTTABONG CHINA
FINE DARJEELING TEA - 2007 |
Puttabong Tea
Estate lies just below Darjeeling
and is one of the largest tea gardens
in Darjeeling area. Owned by Jay Shree
Tea & Industries limited, it is
under Bio-Organic conversion, meaning
all teas from Puttabong will be organic.
This year we purchased some First
Flush teas from Puttabong and it proved
to be one of the best. I would like
to tag Puttabong specially as a First
Flush tea garden, but not to forget
their yearlong production. We visited
Puttabong and met both Mr. Somani
(Superintendent) and Mr. Parekh (Manager).
This time we were looking for a good
value for money tea and after tasting
a line of clonals and chinas, we got
one for you. A marvelous tea in comparison
to its pricing and quality.
To start off with the dry leaves,
its buttery and nutty reminiscent
of groundnut. It has blackish-brownish
with a very slight mixture of green
appearance. The infused leaves bear
lemony notes. The liqor has a full
cup or is full bodied and the taste
is sweet with a slight lemony character.
It has a slight slippery buttery character.
It’s a tea made from pure organic
china bushes resulting in a good yield
having the orthodox Darjeeling character.
It’s a tea which everyone can
afford and enjoy! |

JUNGPANA SFTGFOP1
WIRY DARJEELING TEA - 2007 |
Junpana is a
renowned tea garden situated in the
Kurseong region near Goomtee tea Estate,
but at a much higher elevation than
Goomtee. It produces very good teas
and the Japanese tea connoisseurs
seem to be its great fan. The surprising
thing is, there is no proper road
directly linked to Jungpana and only
through the half way one can ply by
a vehicle. The other half has to be
traversed on foot. Teas from Jungpana
are carried by individual garden porters
on a basis of 1-3 chests on their
back. Amazing isn’t it? Well
we too had to walk to get this tea
for you and now since its with us,
it’s out in the open for you
to buy.
The dry leaves are brownish having
lemony and sweet notes. Its well twisted
and elongated meaning properly rolled.
The infused leaves too bear sweet
and fruity notes with a coppery infusion.
The liqor is full bodied as all Second
Flush teas should be and has a sweet
honey toned cup with a slight hint
of buttery effects. A china grade
tea from Jungpana which is excellent
and worth a try. Most of the teas
from Jungpana are china graded. Its
reasonably priced too. Give it a try. |

RISHEEHAT FLOWERY
(FTGFOP1) DARJEELING TEA - 2007 |
Risheehat Tea
Estate is another one owned by Jay
Shree Tea & Industries Ltd. It’s
a high elevation garden situated in
the vicinity of Orange Valley Tea
Estate and the famous tourist spot
known as Gangamaya and Rock Garden.
We normally don’t go for clonals
during the Second Flush, but this
tea was exceptional and we had to
go for it. Only true and authentic
other tea vendors have recognized
its quality and have bought it. Mr.
Jha, Superintendent of Risheehat,
Sungma and Balasun sent us this sample.
The first sample he sent had a slight
weaker body, but the next lot was
just perfect and we couldn’t
just avoid this marvelous tea.
The dry leaves are larger than the
rest of the teas we have procured
and as the name suggests, its highly
flowery with a very slight roasty
character. The infused leaves are
coppery and opens up to its full size.
It’s has a mixture of lemony,
malty and minty notes. The cup is
full bodied which is smooth and fills
your mouth full with a sweet honey
toned taste. Its lemony to a certain
extent and leaves the mouth with a
sweet lingering after taste. A overall
delightful tea! |

THURBO MUSCAT
DARJEELING TEA - 2007 |
Owned by the Goodricke
Group of Companies, Thurbo Tea
Garden is known for its quality
production of Darjeeling Teas. The
name of the garden owes its origin
to a historic event when the British
set up their camp at the estate to
invade Nepal. The word 'Camp' is referred
to as "Tombu" in Nepali
language and this particular Nepalese
word may have developed into 'Thurbo'
later.
This is one tea we have our eyes on
and think it will be appreciated by
all tea connoisseurs. Thurbo has always
produced excellent teas, but less
known to tea connoisseurs, may be
due to lack of consciousness and proper
marketing. A pure china graded tea
with elongated wiry dry leaves having
chocolaty, malty and fruity notes
more inclined towards the sweet smell
of plum. It’s got a coppery
infusion slightly minty and lemony.
The cup is full-bodied with a sweet-sugary
taste having buttery and malty taste.
On the lines of Castleton Muscatel,
it has some muscatel character which
is invigorating. A quality tea from
Thurbo. |

THURBO (CH)
SPL [CHINA SPECIAL] - 2006 |
Owned by the

Tea Garden is known for its quality
production of Darjeeling Teas. The
name of the garden owes its origin
to a historic event when the British
set up their camp at the estate to
invade Nepal. The word 'Camp' is referred
to as "Tombu" in Nepali

A 'value for money' second flush tea
from Thurbo. Its amazing to know why
the tea garden sold us the tea for
such a low price. Maybe due to their
mass production which made them overlook
this particular tea. Thurbo produces
very good clonal teas, particularly
the famous one is 'Tippy Clonal',
but this second flush tea being a
china grade is greatly under-rated
according to its beautiful character
both as a leaf and in the cup.
Full bodied with excellent muscatel
notes encircle it's character. Has
a marvelous fruity and nutty aftertaste.
Your best bet if you are looking for
a quality tea at a fair budget. |

CASTLETON (SPL)
CH [CHINA SPECIAL]- 2006 |
Owned by the Goodricke
Group, Castleton Tea Garden
is one of the best of all Goodricke's
gardens. The name 'Castleton' comes
from a building which resembled a
castle. This building still exists
in Kurseong (a sub-division of Darjeeling).
It was first planted by Dr. Charles
Graham in the year 1885 and has already
gained fame by fetching world record
price in 1992.
An unmatched variety prepared from
china grade tea leaves revealing the
true character of a Second Flush Darjeeling
Tea. Well rounded cup with almondy
and fruity flavor supported by excellent
muscatel notes. This tea is prepared
from the 'Spring Side' region of Castleton
Tea Garden, which is considered to
have the best china bushes and situated
at a much higher elevation. |

SUNGMA SFTGFOP1
CLASSIC (BIO ORGANIC) - 2006 |
Lying at an altitude
of 5595 ft., Sungma Tea Estate
is an ISO9002 certified tea estate
which recently turned Bio-organic
(one year). With an area of 282 hectares
under tea cultivation, Sungma has
tea bushes comprising mostly of the
chinery hybrid. A certain degree of
clonals occupy the tea estate space.
Best of Sungma clonals are produced
during the First Flush season.
After Mr. Jha joined in as the Superintendent
of Sungma, Risheehat and Balasun,
Sungma got a facelift through the
production of new range of excellent
and quality teas. According to Mr.
Jha, "Quality is what we
are seeking rather than just concentrating
on quantity. At Jayshree we work as
a team; the Managers and the laborers
work hand in hand in order to bridge
the gap and to walk towards a particular
goal i.e. production of quality Darjeeling
teas."
A real delight to be in the company
of. Apart from other teas from Sungma
namely Sungma Musk, Vintage, China
Special etc. this particular 'Classic'
graded tea got a green signal in view
of price and quality. An exotic tea
for quality seekers. |

Slightly smaller dry leaves than the
muscatel delight, this tea is a well
