From a range of teas which we tasted, some won and got the green signal. The selected few lie before you, starting just below this paragraph. We have laid out the best teas 2006 Second Flush could produce - in terms of both tea quality and price. Now, all you have to do is 'choose, pick and savor'.

MARGARET'S HOPE "MUSCATEL DELIGHT" - 2006

Established in 1864, Margaret's Hope Tea Garden bears this unusual name given by the owner, Mr. Cruikshank in memory of his beloved daughter, Margaret. She was very much enchanted by the tea garden and promised to return before sailing for England. Unfortunately she died of a tropical disease leaving the promise unfulfilled. Her father christened the garden as 'Margaret's Hope' in her memory. The garden undoubtedly is truly enchanting as perceived by Margaret with beautiful undulating hilly slopes carpeted with tea bushes.

An excellent Second Flush tea which we will tag it as the "mother of all muscatel teas". It is specially made from a special region in the tea garden which was planted by the first Manager of Margaret's Hope Tea Garden. Last year this particular tea was limited to two invoices (about 210 kgs) only and we guess the world hasn't heard of or seen this tea. Most of it was exported to Japan. This year we got lucky to have found this tea in the garden and immediately grabbed our share - in fact we were the first one to grab it. Its an honor to present you this fabulous tea which is really rare and celestial. Don't hesitate, just get your cup filled and we believe you won't regret.

THURBO (CH) SPL [CHINA SPECIAL] - 2006

Owned by the Goodricke Group of Companies, Thurbo Tea Garden is known for its quality production of Darjeeling Teas. The name of the garden owes its origin to a historic event when the British set up their camp at the estate to invade Nepal. The word 'Camp' is referred to as "Tombu" in Nepali language and this particular Nepalese word may have developed into 'Thurbo' later.

A 'value for money' second flush tea from Thurbo. Its amazing to know why the tea garden sold us the tea for such a low price. Maybe due to their mass production which made them overlook this particular tea. Thurbo produces very good clonal teas, particularly the famous one is 'Tippy Clonal', but this second flush tea being a china grade is greatly under-rated according to its beautiful character both as a leaf and in the cup.

Full bodied with excellent muscatel notes encircle it's character. Has a marvelous fruity and nutty aftertaste. Your best bet if you are looking for a quality tea at a fair budget.

CASTLETON (SPL) CH [CHINA SPECIAL]- 2006

Owned by the Goodricke Group, Castleton Tea Garden is one of the best of all Goodricke's gardens. The name 'Castleton' comes from a building which resembled a castle. This building still exists in Kurseong (a sub-division of Darjeeling). It was first planted by Dr. Charles Graham in the year 1885 and has already gained fame by fetching world record price in 1992.

An unmatched variety prepared from china grade tea leaves revealing the true character of a Second Flush Darjeeling Tea. Well rounded up with almondy and fruity flavor supported by excellent muscatel notes. This tea is prepared from the 'Spring Side' region of Castleton Tea Garden, which is considered to have the best china bushes and situated at a much higher elevation.

SUNGMA SFTGFOP1 CLASSIC (BIO ORGANIC) - 2006

Lying at an altitude of 5595 ft., Sungma Tea Estate is an ISO 9002 certified tea estate which recently turned Bio-organic (one year). With an area of 282 hectares under tea cultivation, Sungma has tea bushes comprising mostly of the chinery hybrid. A certain degree of clonals occupy the tea estate space. Best of Sungma clonals are produced during the First Flush season.

After Mr. Jha joined in as the Superintendent of Sungma, Risheehat and Balasun, Sungma got a facelift through the production of new range of excellent and quality teas. According to Mr. Jha, "Quality is what we are seeking rather than just concentrating on quantity. At Jayshree we work as a team; the Managers and the laborers work hand in hand in order to bridge the gap and to walk towards a particular goal i.e. production of quality Darjeeling teas."

A real delight to be in the company of. Apart from other teas from Sungma namely Sungma Musk, Vintage, China Special etc. this particular 'Classic' graded tea got a green signal in view of price and quality. An exotic tea for quality seekers.

MARGARET'S HOPE CH (SPL) [CHINA SPECIAL] - 2006

An alternative tea to 'Margaret's Hope Muscatel Delight' for tea connoisseurs who would like to get their cup filled with a variety from Margaret's Hope Tea Garden. This tea is fairly priced, but not to be taken as a secondary grade. Each tea has a uniqueness of its own and unlike the muscatel delight, this tea has its own characteristics and beauty.

Slightly smaller dry leaves than the muscatel delight, this tea is a well rounded cup with almondy and fruity nose. Muscatel flavored with a lovely floral bouquet that is lingering in mouth.

Only you can be the best judge for this tea - All we can say is that its worth the money you buy for.
Risheehat Tea Estate is situated just below the town of Darjeeling at an altitude of 3215 ft. to 6276 ft. A beautiful tea garden with picturesque undulating hilly slopes and green vegetation resembling unexplored regions of the world. With an area of 253.42 hectares under plantation, its one of the tea gardens which has balanced itself among other renowned tea gardens by producing excellent Darjeeling Teas. Like Sungma, Risheehat is under the supervision of Mr. Jha (Superintendent) and managed by Mr. Kumar (manager).

Pure china grade tea with a variable amount of tippy appearance. Full bodied, mature and mellow, this well rounded cup has a sweet aroma reminiscent of the Darjeeling muscatel character. An exquisite tea at an affordable rate from Risheehat Tea Estate. This tea is very limited at hand as we have already had a local sale here in Darjeeling itself. So, please hurry if you want to grab this tea.
