List of Tea Estates in Darjeeling District

The history of Darjeeling Tea Estates or tea gardens date back to 1847 when the then government decided to set our Darjeeling Tea nurseries for experimentation and growth. Slowly by 1852 Darjeeling started its first 3 list of Tea Estates in Darjeeling which appeared to be commercial tea plantations namely Tukvar, Steinthal and Aloobari appeared. Gradually numerous Darjeeling Tea gardens cropped up and today there are 80+ tea estates in Darjeeling. Some have closed down, but 87 remains. The tea estates in Darjeeling spread over a region of Seven Valleys which cover almost all of the Darjeeling hills. A list of Darjeeling tea gardens is listed below according to the region they fall into.

Today Darjeeling is one of the most sought after beverage. Most of the tea gardens are now trying to convert to organic tea farming of which many have already been tagged “certified organic” producing organic Darjeeling Tea. Each tea garden specializes in its particular grade of tea like for instance Castleton Moonlight Imperial from Castleton Tea Garden, but this doesn’t mean they don’t produce classic grade tea varieties – they do, which all depends on a particular Darjeeling season or Darjeeling Flush.

Darjeeling Tea Plantations are widely spread over the district

Darjeeling Tea Plantations are not located under one particular area or location. The tea gardens are spread over the Seven Valley regions situated under the district of Darjeeling namely Darjeeling East, Darjeeling West etc. as mentioned above. The distances of these tea estates can be close and some very far. Some are situated so far that the climatic conditions from one tea estate to another doesn’t match. Hence, there is a difference in timing of a particular tea season. Meaning a tea season located at a much lower elevation can have early flushing and start of a season than the higher altitude ones.
