SHOP NEW TEASLopchu Tea Estate nestles in a beautiful valley overlooking Mt Kanchendzonga, emmersed in natural beauty, situated between Darjeeling and Teesta, at an altitude of 4,800 feet. It has 95% of the tea bushes transplanted that were originally brought from Yunnan, China. The name “Lopchu” seems to have been derived from the word “Lepcha” (a tribe), the original inhabitants of the hilly areas of Darjeeling. Established in the early 1860s, Lopchu Tea Garden remained under the British control till 1954 under Messrs. Langmore Brothers, after which two cousins, SN Kanoria and GL Kanoria bought the tea estate. Like so many tea estates in Darjeeling, the third generation of Kanorias are looking after Lopchu. It has around 226 acres under Lopchu tea production of which most of it are exported. A sizeable portion of their production is consumed in India itself as it is famous for it’s unique flavor which the Indian crowd heart.
Most of Lopchu Tea are exported, a sizeable portion of their production is consumed domestically in India itself as it is famous for it’s unique flavor which the Indian crowd heart. They mostly focus on packet teas rather than selling it in the form of loose leaf teas. They normally sell their teas in the following range – GOP (Golden Orange Pekoe), FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe), BM (Broken Mixed), OPF (Orange Pekoe Fannings) and Tea bags (usually dust grade).
Our new teasThe Langmore family were the first Lopchu Tea Estate owners before 1954. Later the Langmore’s (son) settled in Musselburgh, Dunedin, New Zealand. The sweetest thing they did that’s kind of overwhleming for a local like us is that they named their Dunedin home – “Lopchu Villa”. What a lovely and genuine gesture from the Langmores.
