Dry Tea Leaves – A Visual & Aromatic Delight from Arya Darjeeling
The dry leaves of Arya King Diamond Darjeeling – Gold Edition is an example for the extraordinary care and artisanal expertise involved in crafting this rare tea. Plucked exclusively from the estate’s prized AV2 clonal bushes, each set contains just one tender leaf and an unopened bud, ensuring a delicate balance of flavor and aroma from the very start. The plucking is done entirely by hand – mainly by the skilled women tea pluckers of Arya Tea Estate, with a sharp eye for uniformity and precision.
Visually, the leaves are long, wiry and well-rolled, exhibiting a beautiful mix of dark chocolate brown, deep olive green and shimmering golden hues. The golden tips are especially abundant, thick and plush, hence the rightful title of “Gold Edition.” These tips are not just cosmetic but signal youthful vitality and high aromatic potential, both of which are hallmarks of premium Darjeeling teas.
There is a soft, natural bloom on the surface of the leaves – a slight silken sheen that indicates minimal handling and gentle processing. The dry aroma is complex and captivating: sweet and nutty, with subtle hints of dark cocoa, mint, raw almonds and even a fruity sharpness that hints at dried mango or apricot.
Every aspect of the dry leaf, its shape, size, texture, and aroma, reflects the quality of the raw material and the mastery involved in transforming it. This is a work of craftsmanship, captured in every twisted strand of leaf and every glowing golden bud.
Infusion (Wet Leaves): Unfurling Elegance
As soon as the dry leaves of Arya Diamond Darjeeling are immersed in hot water, they come to life with a graceful unfurling. The infused leaves expand generously, filling the lid of the tasting cup and revealing their original, carefully plucked structure – typically one leaf and a bud, a sign of elite-grade Darjeeling tea. This visual alone tells a story of craftsmanship and precision.
The color of the infused leaves is a warm coppery-brown, interlaced with pale golden hues where the golden tips once shimmered dry. This infusion carries a fragrance that is both inviting and complex – a gentle sweetness emerges first, followed by soft notes of lemon zest, toasted almonds and stone fruits like plum and apricot. These scents are not overpowering but harmoniously layered, offering a preview of the cup’s depth.
Touching the infused leaves between your fingers, you can feel their tenderness and elasticity, a clear sign of minimal oxidation and careful rolling, two crucial factors that maintain both appearance and flavor. This tea not only pleases the eye but also awakens the nose, preparing the senses for an extraordinary sip.
Cup or Liquor Characteristics: Complex Fruity Flavors
The brewed cup of Arya King Diamond Darjeeling is a radiant expression of Second Flush mastery. The liquor glows in shades of golden amber to deep ruby red, a visual delight that instantly captures the charm of Darjeeling’s summer harvest. It is neither too light nor too intense – just the right balance that connoisseurs long for in a high-quality Second Flush tea.
On the palate, the tea is medium to full-bodied, delivering an experience that is both brisk and smooth, without any harsh astringency. The first sip introduces a subtle natural sweetness that gently coats the mouth, followed by nutty undertones, evoking toasted almonds and macadamia that linger long after you’ve swallowed. As the cup cools, fruity layers begin to unfold: hints of ripe apples, juicy peaches and tropical pineapple become more pronounced, adding a refreshing vibrancy to each sip.
The tea’s structure is remarkably clean, with no muddiness or bitterness, making it ideal for both casual enjoyment and mindful tasting. This refined cup reflects the signature character of Arya Estate’s AV2 cultivar – a harmony of clarity, complexity, and elegance that only a true Darjeeling Diamond can offer.

I’ve been a devoted customer of Thunderbolt tea for many years, but always purchased First flush teas. This year I miscalculated and ran out of it too early. Thus the second flush became my only option, and I am so glad it happened. First, the dry leaves smell really good: fruity and nutty. Second, the liquor has a gorgeous dark amber color and a wonderful smell. The taste is slightly astringent and very refreshing, no bitterness whatsoever. Make sure you use good water (spring or purified), bad water will simply kill the color and the taste. I am sure I will enjoy more of the second flush teas from now on.
