Castleton Tea First Flush Jade Oolong
As always, we never skip Castleton Tea First Flush. We visited Castleton with an intent to get some top Castleton Moonlight varieties. Yes, we did get it, but along with Castleton Moonlight Imperial, we were shown, a new tea made in the true oolong fashion. We have had a share of Castleton Oolong in the Second Flush, but never had Castleton managed to make an Oolong tea during the First Flush. Yes, this is an Castleton Oolong Darjeeling Tea made for the first time in the Spring harvest. Darjeeling Tea is complex and as Benoy had doubted, the brownish textured tea leaves of Castleton Oolong unlike traditional Darjeeling First Flush tea leaf appearance had a jade like greenish infusion. Most of us would be expecting a dark brownish infusion like that of a Second Flush when compared to the color and appearance of the dry tea leaves. Anyways, as Castleton proudly stands by it’s name, this tea is new, but totally high quality with complex set of underlying floral flavors. The maturity in quality and awesome taste of this Castleton Jade Oolong refers to the experienced hands of the tea makers and the overall careful processing of the tea.

Dry Tea Leaves (Castleton Jade Oolong)
All Castleton Tea Garden Specialty teas fall under the large leaf category teas with higher content of buds/tips. This Castleton Jade Oolong is no different. It has an attractive bloom with prominent shades of brown chunky tea leaves. The chunky silver and golden tips are in abundance with a luster in the form of tiny silver or golden hairs. The tea leaves are voluminous in comparison to the chinary varieties. Its accompanied by a very sweet and mild spicy aroma, honey toned a bit. A complex set of flowery aroma giving you a sense of it’s high quality and taste that comes after brewing.
Infusion or Wet Tea leaves (Castleton Oolong Tea)
This Castleton Oolong Darjeeling has a lively and bright infusion. As opposed to the dry leaf appearance of overall shades of brown, it surprisingly has a bottle-green like infusion reflecting the true color of a real Darjeeling First Flush tea. No matter what color the dry leaf is, the true greenish infusion speaks for itself and the season it is produced in. The slightly yellow-brown mixed with green are commonly representing the buds which comes as two leaves and a bud, visible and prominent. It has a lovely thoroughly pronounced sweet floral nose with some spicy characteristics similar to a mix of cumin seeds and pepper. It is said that the onward journey of the cup is signified by the infusion. If the infusion is bright and lively, the cup will naturally be good.
Cup or Liquor characteristics (Castleton Darjeeling Oolong)
Here too, as the dry leaf color depicts a more of a brown appearance hinting towards more of a Second Flush character and a darker cup, this Castleton Jade Oolong bears the opposite in the cup. Its body is a beautiful golden-yellow brew that is light and bright in character. Every sip you take bursts with floral flavors with a very enjoyable amount of astringency. The cup has a welcoming smooth and mellow character. It has a unique lemony and citrus like taste with a sweet honey toned in flavor. It has some nutty characteristics to it as well. It has a dulcet flavor and the aftertaste is enjoyably brackish with a lingering sweetness
Castleton Jade Oolong as mentioned earlier is the first of it’s kind taken out from Castleton Tea Garden and is amongst their line of Specialty Darjeeling Teas. New, overly mature in its quality and taste as a result of being made by experienced tea makers at Castleton Tea Garden. Be among the first tea lovers to taste this tea. Enjoy your cuppa!
