About Margaret's Hope Tippy Clonal Tea
Margaret’s Hope has been producing high-grade Darjeeling teas for generations. With its ideal elevation, cool winds, and classic Chinese bushes as well as newer clonal varieties, this estate has become synonymous with consistently aromatic and nuanced teas. We first began sourcing from Margaret’s Hope nearly two decades ago, and the bond only deepened over the years – especially with the warm-hearted support of Mr. Sagar Rawat (Factory Assistant Manager, 2007), whose legacy we still honor today. His untimely passing was a great loss, but the spirit of his hospitality and guidance continues to inspire our work. Our memories of him – and of those nourishing breakfast moments with him and Mr. J.D. Rai – remain etched in every cup we share.

Nestled in the misty slopes of the Kurseong valley in Darjeeling, Margaret’s Hope Tea Estate is more than just a name – it is a legacy. Originally established in the 1800s as Bara Ringtong, the garden was renamed after the untimely passing of the manager’s daughter, Margaret, who had fallen in love with the estate but tragically died before she could return. Her memory lives on in every harvest, and perhaps that’s why the teas from this garden seem to carry a deep emotional resonance.
Dry Tea Leaves (A Tippy Clonal Wonder)
The dry leaf appearance of Margaret’s Hope Tippy Clonal – First Flush 2025 is nothing short of a visual delight. The leaves are well-sorted, wiry, and delicately rolled, maintaining their integrity with minimal breakage. You’ll notice an intricate mix of silvery tips and olive-to-brown hues, a telltale sign of early spring plucking and careful craftsmanship. The presence of so many unfurled silver tips reflects not only premium grade but also early morning hand-harvests from the youngest shoots – a labor of love, patience, and expertise.
A closer inspection reveals the shimmering texture of the leaves, with a satin-like sheen that glistens under the light – a signature trait of well-made clonal Darjeelings. The aroma from the dry leaves is nuanced and clean. Breathe in, and you’re met with floral high notes, hints of magnolia and gardenia, underpinned by raw almond, muskmelon rind, and a faint herbal whisper reminiscent of sweet basil or mint. These aromatic layers promise complexity in the cup and speak volumes about the precision of the withering and rolling process undertaken at the estate. Compared to the larger-leafed Moonlight variants, this clonal batch may seem modest in size, but its character and charm are expansive and deeply expressive.
