Phuguri Tea Estate Darjeeling

In 2017 while visiting Singbulli Tea Estate in Mirik, we discovered Phuguri Tea Estate. The experience left a lasting impression on us. We tasted some exceptional chinary and clonal teas, but it was their “Clonal Tips” or “Tippy Clonal” (used interchangeably) that won us over. We immediately made a purchase.

This year, we had the chance to return to Phuguri Tea Estate and acquire their sought-after Clonal Tips made even better with more of golden and silver tips. It’s named “Himalayan Gold” to this special batch this year. The tea garden is owned by the Bagaria Group, which also operates tea estates such as Millikthong and Orange Valley Tea Estate. We are grateful to the Manager of Phuguri for providing us with a wonderful tea tasting session and a memorable experience.

It’s worth mentioning that the “Himalayan Gold” are available in very limited quantities, so we are offering them in small amounts of 25 and 50 grams. This pure clonal variety has a fantastic floral aroma, an attractive appearance, and produces a delightful light liquor with refreshing floral notes when brewed. We highly recommend trying it and savoring its exquisite flavor for yourself.

Dry Tea Leaves (Phuguri Tea Estate)

The silver and golden tip snuggled between two green leaves is quite prominent in this tea. This tea has a greenish-white colour with an abundance of silver ends that resemble elongated, pointed, hairy buds. The white fine fuzzy hairs on the buds and tea leaves suggest that the buds and tea leaves were handled with care during the production process. The leaf structure is more elongated, twisted, and bigger. The majority of the tea leaves look to be dressed in fuzzy apparel with an abundance of silver points. To experience an overpowering scent of freshness and floral essence, it is recommended to sniff the tea leaves as soon as you open the pack. When breathed deeply, the aroma is reminiscent of vanilla with a tinge of lemon and has a nutty profile.

Infusion or Wet Tea leaves (Phuguri First Flush Tea)

It is always magical to watch the long tea leaves and buds unfold in water. For this reason, it is not recommended to use tea bags, as they prevent you from experiencing half of the enjoyment of drinking tea. The infusion has an overall greenish-pale yellow color and an overwhelming fresh floral bouquet that is thoroughly active, indicating the detailed and careful profile used in the manufacturing process to achieve the desired quality and flavor. The chunky silver tips turn pale yellowish-green and the downy fur appears to stick to the main body of the tea due to infusion. The tea imparts fresh floral notes with a somewhat nutty flavor.

Cup or Liquor characteristics (Phuguri Tea Darjeeling)

Phuguri Himalayan Gold, like all Darjeeling First Flush clonals, has a lighter strength compared to other china varieties. Its bright liquor has a light-yellow color, resulting in a lively, fresh floral taste. The cup is smooth and well-balanced, with a brisk character and exceptional flavor. The taste is sweet, floral, and nutty, with a complex flavor profile that includes underlying floral and nutty characteristics. Mild vegetal notes are present, along with an overwhelming and lingering sweet aftertaste. The tea has mild and enjoyable astringency, with dryness on the tongue.

Phuguri Himalayan Gold is a top variety and rare tea from the Phuguri Tea Estate. It impressed us in 2017 and continues to do so this year. This Darjeeling tea is of “A” grade quality, with exceptional taste and quality. It is a marvelous tea that should not be missed. However, it is very limited in availability, so be sure to get your share before it runs out.

Brewing Tips

Water

Use plain filtered or spring water abundance in oxygen. Do not re-use already boiled water for the taste may appear flat.

Temperature

It can be from 175-185 Degree F. Since the tea leaves are larger and delicate, higher temperatures seem to cook it. If your water is too hot, let it cool down for a while.

Quantity of Tea leaves

Standard procedure says 2.5 grams per 100 ml of water, but may not be correct as it is complex due to different cultivars, leaf sizes and make. For this it is recommended you use around one and a half tea spoonful per mug of tea.

Steeping Time

Steeping time for this tea is 3-4 minutes.
