This Second Flush, Puttabong Tea Kakra Musk came in with a lot of other tea invoice lots in the form of samples. There were about 7 invoices of this grade “Kakra Musk” at the time of our sampling during peak Second Flush period and we truly liked 3 invoices. Since we were taking 3 invoices comprising of 106, 133 and 128 kgs respectively, we tried to do a bargain to cut down a few digits on the whole. Yes, we were successful and we got at a fair deal. Stretching about 22 kms, Puttabong Tea Estate in Darjeeling is one of the biggest tea gardens in Darjeeling comprising of 5 divisions. Mr Parikh, manager, was kind enough to sample us a number of tea samples from Puttabong which comprised of various clonals and chinary cultivars. The Kakra Musk grades chosen by us is not that expensive (as an outcome of the bargain) and is an excellent quality tea boasting of lovely fruity muscatel flavor. Try and know for yourselves. It has an overall coppery appearance with a mixture of black, light and dark brown colors. Being a pure china graded and a proper muscatel tea, this 2022 Puttabong Kakra Musk Tea has less of tips compared to the clonal varieties, but big on the fruity flavor. This Darjeeling Tea is well twisted and evenly sized, depicting proper manufacturing process. The tea leaves are standard chinary leaf size that is clean and having a perfect bloom. It has a sweet fragrance which is also chocolaty, honey toned, almondy with some buttery notes and musky. It has mild-sweet like jaggery aroma.

This Second Flush Puttabong Tea has an overall bright coppery infusion with a rare and complex fruity and flowery aroma. It is slightly minty or peppermint like as you inhale which is accompanied by sweet, honey toned fruity flavor which match up to the plum characteristics. A lovely coppery infusion comprising of dark chocolate colored leaves with some shades of brown. This fresh infusion has a overwhelming musky essence which is also a complex set of fruity flavors. It has a pleasing aroma which is like the sweetness of jaggery accompanied by some nutty flavors.

The cup is smooth and full bodied with a coppery cup color. An overwhelming sweet aroma which is somewhat minty in characteristics seem to govern the cup. This is in turn accompanied by other notable fragrance which is almond like and sweet reminiscent of the fruit guava and plum. When doing the first heavy slurping which we do as a rule for tea tasting, the tip of the tongue suddenly gets salty which further circulates throughout the mouth diverting into different complex tastes. The diverted tastes are almondy, sweet, honey toned, minty and limey at the tongue tip. Has a sweet aftertaste.

Darjeeling is actually famous more for it’s classic versions such as muscatel flavors and this is one such tea which boasts of what a real Darjeeling is.
